My New Favorite Razor: Absolute Perfection for Head & Face The Blackland Blackbird Machined Stainless Steel (Open Comb) has officially become my absolute favorite razor. I use this tool for both head and face shaves, typically waiting 3 to 4 days between sessions. Finding a single razor that can effortlessly navigate both areas after a few days of growth can be tough, but the blade feel on this open comb version is a perfect match for what I need. The machined finish gives it a great utilitarian aesthetic, and the raw tactile feedback and efficiency make quick work of dense stubble without a hint of irritation. I absolutely love it. It is a beautifully engineered, high-performance razor that has completely taken over my rotation.

I really think you make an excellent product. My face shaves are phenomenal. But I am very unimpressed with the results of my head shaves. The different base really gave me a much closer head shave. But I still continued to experience a lot of irritation on other areas of my head. For that reason I have decided that the blackbird is not the right razor for me.

Perfect for every day shave! Now my go to versus waiting a few days before using the original blackbird. Love it!

I bought the Blackbird with the standard and the lite baseplates and really like them both. The lite plate is noticeably smoother, with less bade feel. Great machining and customer service as usual. I had a problem with my order and they got back to me within hours, not days, and rectified the issue quickly.

I have and use the Blackbird open comb plate and the Lite plate. The solid be at plate may be the perfect balance of efficiency and aggression. My first shave with it was simply perfect. Kudos to Blackland for the design and engineering behind this.

First open comb base I ever used. Really efficient when shaving longer stubs of beard, and AFAICT the fit and tolerances are perfect (given that I bought this in addition to a normal razoer with a closed comb as default).

I would have bought it with the initial purchase but couldn’t find the option. It is really nice with me being a daily shaver. The less aggression is nice for daily.

Added versatility for an already amazing razor. The open comb plate hasn't felt much more aggressive to me than the safety bar. It does, however, up the efficiency enough to work outstanding for weeks that I haven't shaved as frequently as normal and need to cut through longer growth. I haven't noticed any roughness from the teeth and they seem to glide well during shaving. Despite not being sure how they would behave during initial inspection.

Super happy to be able to add more versatility to an already outstanding razor. The Lite plate is a great option for days that I have some skin irritation or just looking for a quick clean-up. Only small issue I've noticed is this plate seems to be a little more picky on the angle than the regular safety bar.

I initially purchased the Blackbird Lite, an excellent product, very well finished and well-balanced. Perfect for daily shaving, smooth strokes with a barely noticeable blade. For beards that last several days, you need to make multiple passes to achieve satisfactory results, so I also purchased the base plate. With this plate, the blade is quite noticeable. I used a Personna Lab Blue, but two passes were enough for excellent results.

Simply the BEST shave I have ever had from any safety razor, super efficient and smooth.

The Blackbird Lite may, in fact, be the perfect three piece razor. I tend to like mild- to mid-agression razors. Examples would be classic Gillette Tech or a medium plate Rockwell. I purchased the standard Blackbird with an open comb, and while it is a masterpiece in milled stainless steel in its own right, I always had to shave with a certain degree of care. I decided to try the Lite plate on impulse and my shaves with it were easy and calming. The machining is without parallel -- the handle is cut to be grippy when wet, but it is instantly recognizable in a drawer of other razors. The Lite is currently on a very short rotation and with a sharp blade like a Feather or a Nacet reliably lets me shave my best. Congratulations, Blackland team! Truly a special bit of engineering and execution. Note, if you like more aggressive razors, the standard or open comb plate might be a better fit for you. But this one's a winner for me.

Lovely stuff

Blackland's Blackbird open comb plate is for the experienced shaver. You have to move slowly and carefully, but the shave is so nice and close, and the open comb works as a wonderful guide. I find it more satisfying than the Lite and the regular plates, since I now own all three. But as mentioned, you need to know your face well and you need to be thinking about what your doing.

I'm thrilled. Would never have thought that such efficiency is possible with such a smooth shaving feeling. It clearly stands out of my remaining razors. I first bought the blackbird lite, because I had respect for the strong bladefeel, which is mentioned in some reviews. And yes, more bladefeel like the lite, but hardly more aggressive. My new favorite shaver. I love it.

After starting with the Blackbird Lite Plate, and lacking a bit of efficiency, the Blackbird is fanstastic - less buffing, less irritation!

I am very happy with the workmanship, no sharp edges. The greenest razor in my range, a specialist would call it, it is extremely blade tolerant. Now I'm trying with the open comb, which definitely likes very sharp blades, at least for me, and the spring is now the best, but there are still a few blades left. What is interesting is that it is less sound tolerant than the closed one. He likes it extra spicy. And if you do have the DART in your range, please let me know and I would buy it. Started out with the Lite base plate. After using it for sixth months or so, I became curious to try the regular base plate. Glad I did. The regular plate requires more focus which some mornings can be a challenge but the resulting shave is as close to perfect as it can get.

For one year I have been shaving with the BB Lite and despite the fact the Lite is great I missed some efficiency. Well, if you want efficient, buy the original BB. A DFS after one pass! Shaving with the BB requires more focus and a lite touch. The alum block is working overhours again, which was not the case with the Lite. Surely this can be contributed to the not yet finished learning curve. Great to feel such a pronounced difference between the BB and the BB Lite. Both have their place in the den! Thanks Blackland!

Wow, the open comb (OC) baseplate is amazing! The OC baseplate gives me a close shave that allows me to go every other day. I am still under a year with DE shaving but I can tell you it is all technique but once you get it down, it will reward you with an excellent shave. I get best results with a Feather blade regardless the razor I use. My neck and chin area has some pretty thick hair which other sharp blades do not do as well. While I still like using the Lite baseplates, it kinda makes me need to shave daily. The OC plate allows me to go every other day. Best part is that all of these parts are interchangeable so I can mix n match as I please. Crossing my fingers a Bronze version comes out soon!

The open-comb plate doesn't feel very good on my skin. I have the stainless machined version. The teeth are too sharp and to dig. Other than that, the final result of the shave is about the same as the closed-comb with the only advantage being that it leaves behind more shaving cream allowing one to buff or have more strokes per area.

This baseplate was the winning ticket for me. I will keep my Lite baseplate but this one takes no prisoners. What an efficient shave!

Blackbird has far more blade feel than Lite but definitely much more efficient

Smooth and very efficient. Unbelievably comfortable and irritation free shaved. I honestly love this razor. It has given me incredible shaves every time so far. I cannot say enough good things about this razor and have been recommending it every chance I get.

I took advantage of the Black Friday sale and purchased both the Machined Blackbird top plate and a Blackbird Titanium Stand. Both items arrived promptly in the UK without fear of the import duties . And just to add both items are perfect.

I’ve been on a near two year journey with the Blackbird. It started out with the OC, which I absolutely loved!! It absolutely slays multiple days of growth as good or better than any razor I have. In addition, the style, build quality, and customer service make it IMHO, The great white of the razor market. It’s as efficient as nearly any aggressive shaver on the market but more friendly. However, as a 5-6 day/week shaver, I found it to be just a bit much as a daily driver. So I bought the lite base plate, which absolutely allows for daily shaves without worry. However there is a slight drop in efficiency and closeness. Plus it has pretty much no gap, which I think affects its ability to clear hair. I pulled the trigger on the SB to complete the collection. Haven’t used the lite since! I’ll probably keep the lite for the times when maybe I need a break but the SB plate has been a winner for me. Thanks Blackland! You’re the best! John

It's ok. For me is it an upgrade Blackbird Lite to the normal Blackbird.

After my fabulous seven-day trial of the SB Blackbird, my OC baseplate turned up. Naturally, I fitted it straight away and had an EVEN BETTER shave. As I'm an LHF (Lightweight Handle Fanboy) I used my Phoenix Filament handle (5.5 grams) with my OC Blackbird on the following shave. PURE MAGIC. At last, I have my GRAIL RAZOR. Thank you so much, Shane (and Fran at Phoenix).

It’ a great razor

This is the perfect balance of aggressiveness, smoothness and efficiency. I originally got the open comb and wasn't happy. It's a totally different razor without the open comb. It is easy to use where it doesn't require me to pay close attention while shaving. It plows through hair.

I purchased 2 Blackbirds many years ago. I sold off my safety bar version and kept my OC version. I purchased an SB plate, as I find it much more comfortable and the efficiency is off the charts. The best razor I have ever used.

The blackbird is the best DE razor that I have tried. I use all three baseplates, depending on how much growth I have and they’re always up for the task. The workmanship is excellent and I didn’t experience any sort of learning curve with the standard and open comb plates. I’d highly recommend giving it a go.

I had heard that the Blackbird is aggressive therefore I have bought both the lite and the regular base plate. Not tried the lite so far but the regular base plate is great, not aggressive at all, efficient and gentle with the made in US Personna blade included in the box. Really a great razor, my first high end razor, I'm not disappointed at all. I may have preferred it a bit lighter, I'll see if I can get an Ti handle to see how it works.

Originally bought the blackbird lite. Was smooth but not as efficient as I would like. Just bought the original blackbird plate, very efficient and shaves just as smooth. Will be selling the lite plate, making the original my main driver. It's all about technique. I have learned, very light touch is all that is needed. I can shave with just about any razor now including my R41 with a feather blade.

Got a new Blackbird OC baseplate and had a chance to break it in today. It just looks so cool, the open comb really compliments the handle so well! I got to say this was definitely more blade feel than the SB. Had a great shave with no irritation. I'm happy with the purchase. I don't shave everyday so I think this will fit into the rotation as a very effective shaver. I can use the SB when I need to shave more often. I do think the SB was easy and smooth right off the bat and has a much more mild feel to me. The only comparison I can make for this OC is I think my Karve OC D plate is a bit more aggressive. Going to take a few shaves to get more comfortable with it. Happy shaving!

I have a mechanic brass blackbird but I have to buy the sb polish base plate in ss and it is fantastic!! It is very smooth and super efficient and the brass and stainless steel is very elegant and precious.

I originally ordered the Blackbird in the black finish -- exquisite craftsmanship. The open comb was a bit aggressive for me, hence my interest in the safety bar. While the bar is in stainless and not black, it works well and the shave is truly fantastic. Is the next step a Tradere? Will you be making more of those?

Completely different feel and shave from the open comb. Both are great and everyone has his own preference but the Bird with the safety bar is now my go to.

I've used many razors including the Smart Helix light, (which arrived right before the invasion), Muhle, Feather razor, and others. The Blackbird open comb is the best at mowing through 4-5 days growth, 2nd pass with the closed comb or the Smart Helix. The Blackbird is so smooth with no nicks, it's amazing!

Sometimes, you have to bite the bullet and order directly from the manufactory and this was one of those occasions for me, as none of the companies UK stockist had this item in stock and had no idea when they would be receiving it. I was sceptical (not of Shane or his company), about ordering directly because of the issue of the dreaded import taxes that may be levied upon arrival here in the UK, but on this occasion - the three items that I purchased arrived promptly without these duties being levied. And just to add all three items are perfect.

Picked up your Blackbird SB plate to complement my open comb plate I already had. Both shave fabulous , and I love the fact I can change the look to suit my shave. Always tops in customer service as well.

I had to wait a long time for the polished base plate open comb, but it has been totally worth it! I was already satisfied with the closed version of the Blackbird, but the open comb takes it one step further. Particularly effective and a mirror-smooth result, no irritation whatsoever. in short, with the Blackbird oc I have a winner in the house!

First of all, I would like to thank Shane for all your help in getting the brass open comb plate to me. The open comb plate on the blackbird is nothing short of wonderful. It provides for a very close shave without any hint of harshness. For an experienced shaver, this is the plate to go for. The result is a superbly close, efficient and comfortable shave. For those of us not blessed with soft downy hair, this is an ideal plate for your blackbird.

I wanted to have a complete razor (open comb plate and closed comb plate), so I ordered the closed comb plate and I admit not having regretted my purchase, I get shaves that are soft and smooth. an efficiency rarely obtained with other razors in my rotation!
