Era

Metal 3D printing has been around for a while, but it had been relegated to big and complex low-volume parts where the high price could be justified. Few consumer products were made this way as the price was too high and the volumes far too low.

This is the dawn of a new era. We've partnered with 3DEO, an additive manufacturing startup based in Los Angeles. Their propriety and novel technology combines cutting-edge 3D printing technology with the speed and dependability of CNC milling. The result is the first metal 3D printer capable of true mass production with dimensional accuracy matching CNC and cost matching cast parts.

We spent two years working alongside 3DEO to create a razor as precise as a CNC machined razor at a fraction of the cost. The Era's head is 3D-printed in 17-4 stainless steel, resulting in parts that are 99% as dense as solid billet metal. After the top cap and base plate have been printed, shave-critical surfaces are CNC machined to ensure perfect performance. In this way, we are able to create a razor with the same tolerances, strength, and accuracy as a fully machined razor.

It's our belief that innovation like this will allow USA made products to be cost competitive on the global stage without sacrificing quality or design.

After each piece of the Era is printed or machined, it receives a multi-stage media blasting process to reduce layer lines, increase grip, and create a smooth, attractive finish.

With ten different base plate options, the Era experience is as varied as the faces of our customers are. Because of the unique geometry afforded by 3D-printing, each Era configuration features perfect edge-to-edge blade clamping that makes it the most stable and rigid razor on the market. This translates to predictable performance with zero blade chatter.

The blade support also makes the Era nearly impossible to clog due to its massive lather channels. Machined razors have to compromise between blade support and big lather channels. However, with 3D-printing, we are able to create an overhanging blade support that cannot be machined. This allows us to not compromise blade clamping or lather flow.

When designing the Era, we chose to emphasize smoothness and ease-of-use. All five of the Era base plate levels are comfortable to use and even the highest levels are not exceedingly aggressive. Fans of aggressive, blade-forward, and highly efficient razors should choose a razor like the Blackbird over the Era.
